Chris Ware, Dan Clowes, Taiyo Matsumoto; these artists have opened up new dimension in language. By merging word and image, and tackling complex themes, they have made a mass-producible and accessible visual medium, and advanced the role of the graphic novel.
Mediums associated with craft have an inherent accessibility as well. By using readily produced domestic material such as tile, I have focused largely upon the concept of common narrative, or the way themes emerge repeatedly through-out different time and culture. Story is how we relate experience to one another, and place that existence within a larger framework. Inspired largely by the humor and complexity of the work of graphic novelists, my aim is to place these themes into a personal space, connecting the viewer to a larger mythology.
