Marilyn (Never Got Old), 2004
with sound by Jeff Ray
This single channel projection combines footage from
one of the few dramatic roles which Marilyn Monroe ever
performed, in the thriller "Niagara", with footage of an
uncannily framed elderly woman's breast and a short
text referencing the Hollywood icon from "Masculin-
Fémenin" by Jean Luc Godard.
With a nod to the filmic appropriations and to the experimental combination of sound and image by a post-MTV generation of artists, in Cambre’s video the nonlinear narrative, the referential distances and the relation to memory, time, desire and the aging body surrender to the eeriness of the image and the sound composed by San Francisco Bay Area musician Jeff Ray.
