sarah bowen is thrilled to present new works by contemporary artists Kasarian Dane and Javier Cambre, as part of its opening celebration.

Kasarian Dane’s Untitled Paintings is a celebration of color. On one level, the paintings are simple exercises in color interaction, placing one bar of color next to another. Yet beyond this simple formality, he views color contains the potential to speak about freedom and intoxication, redemption and corruption, as well as beauty and cosmetic decoration. His technique of hand painting oil on aluminum results in works that are simultaneously flat and glossy, while the brush creates slight nuances and imperfections revealed upon closer inspection. Dane states, “I love color, more specifically, I love color through the medium of paint. I continue to be fascinated by the fact that paintings that are the focus of all my solitary efforts in an isolated studio are reduced to a colorful back ground for social interaction.”

Dane has shown at galleries in Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as at New York University. Dane holds a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. He is currently a Professor of Painting and Drawing.

Javier Cambre’s Marilyn (Never Got Old) combines footage from the Hollywood icon’s performance in the thriller ‘Niagara’, with images and text created and selected by the artist. In Cambre’s video, the nonlinear narrative, and commentary on memory, time, and the aging body are scored by an original sound composition by San Francisco musician, Jeff Ray.

Cambre’s current works include the incorporation of video, inserting non-traditional narratives within the cinematic frames. His work could be described as a form of conceptual collage, in which through a process of editing and juxtaposition, he may combine apparently unrelated materials or components, such as modern forms with vernacular architecture, or original materials with segments from films or direct reference to such films. These combinations aim at deconstructing each individual component and at the same time at the creation of a third meaning or narrative in the new whole which is constructed.

Cambre’s work has been featured in the Whitney Biennial, at PS1, and El Museo del Barrio. He holds a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. Cambre was born in Puerto Rico and lives and works in New York. sarah bowen gallery is dedicated to artists who create contemporary works in all mediums.
